Point of sale (POS)

The counter where a sale is billed and paid for, and the billing software and hardware a shop uses to do it.

Also called POS, billing software, POS system, checkout

Point of sale, or POS, is the moment and place a customer pays. In practice it means the billing system at the counter: the software, plus a scanner, receipt printer and cash drawer. It adds up items, applies discounts and tax, takes payment and prints or sends the bill.

A good POS does more than add up. Each bill updates stock, the customer's account and the day's cash totals at the same time, so the numbers are ready when you close. A slow or unreliable one creates queues, and a counter that cannot bill when the internet drops loses sales.

A customer buys 14 items for ₹1,236 and pays ₹1,000 by UPI and ₹236 in cash. The POS records both payments on one bill. Stock for all 14 items goes down at the same moment. Kownt X's billing works offline and syncs when the connection returns.
